Koinobori (鯉のぼり), meaning 'carp streamer' in Japanese, are carp-shaped windsocks traditionally flown in Japan to celebrate Tango no sekku (端午の節句), a traditional calendrical event which is now designated as Children's Day (子供の日, Kodomo no hi), a national holiday in Japan. Landscapes across Japan are decorated with koinobori from April to early May. The tradition apparently comes from an ancient Chinese story about carp, which swam up a waterfall and turned into dragons. The carp, or koi in Japanese, became symbols of perseverance. The Japanese version tells of the koi swimming up the waterfall, but does not mention the dragons. Parents hope their children will be as spirited and determined as the strong carp that can swim upstream and even through powerful waterfalls.
This koinobori is extremely rare. In the gorgeous antique condition, it is large, long, and the colours shown on this piece are still vibrant and absolutely stunning in person. It was handcrafted around the pre-war period using cotton. Hand drawn by craftsmen using a traditional dyeing technique called tsutsugaki, which was extremely time-consuming.
This is an old and thin fabric and has been stored for a long time, so the threads and material are in antique condition with rich patina. There are multiple stains, tears and
fading, and that make this piece incredibly unique and one of a kind. You can have it hung up from a high ceiling in the house as a piece of art, or enjoy it for its own seasonal celebration.
Since this is one of a kind (antique / vintage) item, all the imperfections shown are part of its character and considered as such rare beauty that is deeply valued and appreciated. Enjoy wabi-sabi.
