This is a very durable shopping basket made of bamboo, often used and loved by the busy merchants going about the fresh produce/fish market in Japan.
It is well ventilated, water resistant, and has a large capacity. Depending on your lifestyle, this is a versatile basket that can function well in many different situations. Excellent for farmer's markets, picnics, etc, it's also great as interior storage for magazines, blankets, toys, tools and such. Because of the large capacity and sturdy construction, it can be a reliable bag to carry your essential items for work such as notebooks, documents, laptop computer, lunchbox, water bottle, etc....
Originally made in northern Iwate Prefecture, this sturdy basket is handwoven from a special slender bamboo called shinodake, grown naturally in the mountainous regions of Iwate. Without the use of many tools, this basket is neatly woven using only the fingertips to create a beautiful design one by one.
During the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods, Iwate's shinodake baskets were supplied to all over Japan as everyday items. And they are still made in the traditional way today. The colour will gradually turn from light green/yellow into deeper brown, while developing a glossy, well-worn texture over time and use. The more you use it, the more it becomes beautiful. This heavy-duty basket will last for many years to come with love and care.
Each basket is handmade by skilled craftsmen, using natural materials. There may be slight variations in colour, texture, or shape as a result, and the basket you receive may not be exactly as pictured. Every piece is one of a kind and it is exactly one of the unique benefits of purchasing a handcrafted item.
