Ideal for serving soy sauce, dipping sauces, olive oil for bread, and other liquids, this small dish is also perfect for condiments and garnishes. Its sculptural silhouette adds a subtle sense of depth, naturally highlighting whatever you serve, much like a small Japanese serving bowl. It is equally lovely for serving nuts, cut fruit, or a little ice cream after a meal.
Shionari in Japanese means the sound of the ocean waves coming back to the shore, and you can feel the ocean movement in the gentle, flowing curves of the dish.
Made in collaboration with the Mesm Tokyo Hotel, this line of dishes is meant to fascinate the five senses by invoking the sound and scent of the ocean waves. The texture of the dishes is also very important, as it is Japanese custom to hold the vessel while eating. A penetrating glaze is applied, which does not impair the texture of the ceramic, creating a smooth, unpolished texture that feels pleasantly warm against your hand, not unlike the heated sand on your favourite beach.
In contrast to the matte finish and light, thin construction, the Shionari dishes are durable and stain-resistant, making them suitable for daily use at home, and strong enough for professional settings as well.
