This traditional Iga-yaki suribachi (Japanese grinding bowl) features a finely combed interior, designed to make grinding sesame seeds, beans, miso, tofu, herbs, and spices easy and efficient. Pair it with a sansho wooden pestle (available separately) to release the natural aromas and flavours of your ingredients for delicious home-cooked meals.
Each bowl is carefully thrown on the potter’s wheel by skilled craftspeople using traditional techniques. Made with locally sourced clay and natural glazes from the Iga region of Mie Prefecture, Iga ware is known for its distinctive earthy texture and rustic character. The natural inclusions in the clay give each piece a unique surface, while the simple outer glaze lends a refined touch.
Practical and versatile, this suribachi can go straight from food preparation to the table. Once you have ground your seasonings, simply add the remaining ingredients and serve directly from the bowl. The larger sizes are especially useful for preparing generous portions of goma-ae (vegetables dressed with sesame), tororo-imo (grated Japanese yam), or mixing pesto with pasta—all in one bowl.
Please note: As each piece is handcrafted, natural variations in colour, glaze tone, gloss, and finish are to be expected. These subtle differences are part of the individual character of each bowl.
Care Instructions
As Iga ware is made from porous earthenware, we recommend seasoning the bowl before its first use to help reduce the absorption of stains and odours. Place the plate in a pot of rice-washing water and bring it to a boil, simmering for approximately 10 minutes. Allow it to cool before removing the plate, then rinse and dry thoroughly. After each use, wash the plate and allow it to dry completely before storing it in a well-ventilated place. (See the care instruction below).

Materials
Iga ware 伊賀焼, iga-yaki
Iga ware (伊賀焼, Iga-yaki) is a traditional style of Japanese pottery made in Iga City, Mie Prefecture, using locally sourced clay and time-honoured techniques. With a history dating back to the Nara period (710–794), Iga ware is known for its distinctive, rustic beauty, shaped in part by the unique properties of the local clay.
Due to the handcrafted production, there are individual differences in shade, gloss, and size of glaze. Its beauty is one of a kind.
As earthenware is more porous than porcelain, it can absorb moisture, food stains, and odours. Before using your Iga ware for the first time, please follow the care instructions to help prepare the pottery and protect it from staining and unwanted odours.
