An Iga-yaki rectangular plate with crisp, defined edges and a simple, rustic character. Its handmade quality and earthy texture offer a tangible sense of warmth from the natural clay.
With its elongated shape, you might first imagine serving a whole grilled fish on this plate. In practice, however, it proves wonderfully versatile for a variety of dishes and side dishes. Arrange a few onigiri (rice balls) alongside small portions of your favourite dishes for a simple, one-plate meal, or use it to serve grilled fish, seasonal vegetables, and other everyday favourites. This is a plate that adapts easily to different occasions and ways of serving.
The Iga region of Mie Prefecture was once beneath the waters of Lake Biwa and is known for its high-quality clay. The local clay has a particularly coarse texture, making it challenging to work with. Skilled craftspeople carefully knead and refine the clay by hand until it becomes smooth and workable.
Each plate is shaped using a traditional technique called tatara-zukuri, in which slabs of clay are pressed into plaster moulds. Because every piece is shaped by hand, subtle irregularities emerge naturally, giving each plate its own character. No two pieces are exactly alike in size or shape, and each displays its own unique variations in texture, colour, and finish.
Care Instructions
As Iga ware is made from porous earthenware, we recommend seasoning the plate before its first use to help reduce the absorption of stains and odours. Place the plate in a pot of rice-washing water and bring it to a boil, simmering for approximately 10 minutes. Allow it to cool before removing the plate, then rinse and dry thoroughly. After each use, wash the plate and allow it to dry completely before storing it in a well-ventilated place. (See the care instruction below).

Materials
Iga ware 伊賀焼, iga-yaki
Iga ware (伊賀焼, Iga-yaki) is a traditional style of Japanese pottery made in Iga City, Mie Prefecture, using locally sourced clay and time-honoured techniques. With a history dating back to the Nara period (710–794), Iga ware is known for its distinctive, rustic beauty, shaped in part by the unique properties of the local clay.
Due to the handcrafted production, there are individual differences in shade, gloss, and size of glaze. Its beauty is one of a kind.
As earthenware is more porous than porcelain, it can absorb moisture, food stains, and odours. Before using your Iga ware for the first time, please follow the care instructions to help prepare the pottery and protect it from staining and unwanted odours.
