Iga Kittachi Rice Bowl – Shino

An Iga-yaki rice bowl that feels naturally at home in everyday life, complementing a variety of rice dishes, from classic white rice to brown rice, and takikomi gohan (Japanese rice cooked with seasonal ingredients and seasonings). Slightly larger than a traditional Japanese rice bowl, it offers a little extra room for generous servings.
Its charm lies in its simple, rustic character and the gentle warmth of the clay. The contrast between the rough, unglazed foot and the generous coating of thick, softly flowing glaze highlights the natural beauty of the materials. With its endearing shape and tactile finish, this is a bowl that becomes all the more beautiful with everyday use.
Both the clay and glaze are sourced locally in Iga. In Iga City, Mie Prefecture, where a rich tradition of earthenware pottery lives on, skilled craftspeople carefully knead the clay, shape it on the potter’s wheel, and form each bowl by hand.
The texture and finish vary from piece to piece, giving each bowl its own distinctive character. Sometimes revealing unexpected expressions, these bowls embody the simple, earthy beauty unique to the land of Iga. We invite you to hold one in your hands and appreciate the natural character of its clay. Beautiful on its own or paired with other Iga ware, this rice bowl brings a natural warmth and a touch of rustic charm to everyday meals.
Please note: As each piece is individually handcrafted, variations in colour, glaze tone, gloss, texture, and size are natural. These subtle differences are part of the character and beauty of each unique piece.

Materials
Iga ware 伊賀焼, iga-yaki
Iga ware (伊賀焼, Iga-yaki) is a traditional style of Japanese pottery made in Iga City, Mie Prefecture, using locally sourced clay and time-honoured techniques. With a history dating back to the Nara period (710–794), Iga ware is known for its distinctive, rustic beauty, shaped in part by the unique properties of the local clay.
Due to the handcrafted production, there are individual differences in shade, gloss, and size of glaze. Its beauty is one of a kind.
As earthenware is more porous than porcelain, it can absorb moisture, food stains, and odours. Before using your Iga ware for the first time, please follow the care instructions to help prepare the pottery and protect it from staining and unwanted odours.
