Kiso Hinoki 木曽檜, kiso japanese cypress

Hinoki (Japanese cypress) is an evergreen tree that is widely distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu with the Tohoku region (Fukushima prefecture) as the northern limit, but only natural cypress that grows in “Kiso valley” that straddles Nagano and Gifu prefectures can be called “Kiso Hinoki”. The steep slopes of Kiso Mountain are rainy, especially in winter, when it is surrounded by severe cold and deep snow. Due to its harsh natural environment, Kiso cypress grows very slowly, taking twice or three times as long as cypress growing elsewhere.

Hinoki repeats expansion and contraction every time it absorbs moisture or dries. The wood is naturally antibacterial and has a refreshing scent. Its natural resin makes it resistant to mould and mildew, and ideal for use in wet or damp spaces.

After every use, rinse with water and wipe any remaining moisture with a dry cloth. Place it upside down or lean it against the wall to dry. If mould starts growing, please scrape with a Tawashi scrub brush or sandpaper.

Use & storage: Avoid direct sunlight, excessive drying, or long-term immersion in water as it may cause cracks due to warping or shrinkage of the wood. When not using for a long period of time, wrap it in a thin cloth and store it in a dry and well-ventilated place.

Resin: Oil stains may appear on the surface of the wood which is a natural resin generated from kiso hinoki and is harmless to the human body. This resin is the source of the scent of hinoki, and contains water resistance and sterilisation properties. If you are concerned about the stickiness, it can be wiped off with rubbing alcohol.

Copper band: When your hinoki wood is exposed to direct sunlight for a long time, or when it hasn’t been used in a while, the copper band that wraps around the surface of the wood may come off due to shrinkage. You can place the copper band back to its original position, then fill the product with lots of water for a while as the moisture helps the wood expand again.
