Tawashi, a traditional Japanese scrub brush, are still a ubiquitous household cleaning tool in many homes in Japan.
These Shuro Tawashi brushes are all made by hand, using the bark of the windmill palm tree called Shuro, a natural material familiar to Japanese culture since ancient times. Shuro’s flexible and soft texture is ideal when utilized for scrub brushes and brooms.
Durable and long-lasting, easy and gentle to use for cleaning pots and pans, cutting boards, dishes. Also great for removing scorching and rust, kitchen sinks, bathtubs, floors, dirty boots, and anything else that can use a heavy-duty scrubbing. The Tawashi lifts away dirt one bristle at at time, so regular water is sufficient enough for normal washing-up. For greasy or heavily soiled items, apply only a small amount of dishwashing liquid to the bristles.
The Shuro Tawashi is a fantastic alternative to modern kitchen tools made from synthetic materials.
Please note: Handmade products may be slightly different in shape and size due to the inherent inconsistency of production. While the conditions of the materials are carefully overseen by craftsmen on an individual basis, this can also result in a wider array of possible final dimensions.
[Various ways you can utilize Shuro Tawashi]
・Washing dishes, drinking vessels, and ceramics
・Washing cookware such as a colander, knife or cutting board
・Washing soil from root vegetables
・Peeling the skin of vegetables
・Massaging / exfoliating when bathing
・Removing dirt and stains from clothing
From ancient times, the windmill palm “Shuro” has long been an important local product in the Kishu area (Wakayama prefecture). However, the demand for this material has reduced drastically as a result of increasing replacement products made of inexpensive imported materials.
The local industry still using the Japanese windmill palm has almost disappeared, and now there are only a few craftsmen who have the skills to collect the bark of the tree. Therefore, materials gathered in Kishu are extremely valuable these days.
J SHURO vs SHURO
J SHURO:
Made from premium Japanese Shuro still grown in Japan
SHURO:
Made in Japan using imported Shuro from other regions
Advantages that materials grown in Kishu have over other imported products:
✶ No chemicals, No disinfectant
It is an organic farming method. No chemicals such as pesticides and disinfectants are used after harvest for the bark of the windmill palm tree of Kishu. The domestic bark of the windmill palm tree is delivered to their workshop soon after it is gathered. The products are delivered fresh to the customers.
Kishu-made J SHURO Tawashi has a fine lustre, brighter reddish colour, and more uniform fibers. It is also softer and fresher.
On the other hand, it is unsure how windmill palm trees are grown and how people harvest the bark in other regions as TAKADA has not seen the conditions firsthand.
✶ Harvesting method which is coexistent with trees and use of only the finest quality carefully selected growth
Japanese domestic windmill palm trees are quite rare. The bark of windmill palm trees in the Kishu area is rarely harvested, and the reduced demand for the windmill palm trees has led to a decreased number of well-cared-for mountains.
✶Small production with carefully selected materials
Skilled craftsmen carefully remove the bark of the trees by hands. They take good care of the trees by controlling weeds and harmful insects and thin out leaves and flowers regularly.
Trading volume of the imported bark of the windmill palm tree from China, which is the centre of windmill palm cultivation nowadays, is sufficient, thus TAKADA can manufacture quality products with uniform texture by carefully choosing superior parts of the bark. Please note that all products made from imported Shuro are in no way inferior.
All products, both J SHURO and SHURO Tawashi, comply with the following European Community Regulation: (EC) No 1935/2004 OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL, materials, and articles intended to come into contact with food.
Products may be slightly different in shape and size due to the handmade production.
The conditions of the materials are carefully adjusted by craftsmen one by one.
